Have you ever put on eyeglasses made for someone else? When we do, everything looks a bit out-of-focus, or bent at strange angles and abnormal. It feels uncomfortable and unhelpful. We don’t like distorted vision!
A similar thing can happen with our thoughts. We can hold ideas that distort our perceptions of the world around us. We might see friends talking and decide they are talking about us. We wake up with a headache and wonder if it is a brain tumor. Our opinions become facts, whether they are wrong or not. Counselors call this process Cognitive Distortion.
I like to help my counseling clients discover these Distortions. You can investigate which ones you are holding on your own. Take some time to look at this helpful website. You’ll be glad to find better “glasses” to help your vision!
